THE BARRY GOLDBERG BLUES BAND - BLOWIN' MY MIND

Chicago-style blues practitioner Barry Goldberg (keyboards/vocals) first came to prominence after appearing with Bob Dylan (guitar/vocals) at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. Shortly after that he teamed up with Steve Miller (guitar/vocals) to form the Goldberg-Miller Blues Band, releasing a pair of mostly ignored 7" singles. After Miller split to the Bay Area to form his own blues band, Goldberg and the remnants of the short-lived Goldberg-Miller union headed to Music City U.S.A. to cut Blowing My Mind (1966) . Joining Goldberg were several up-and-coming notables, including Charlie Musselwhite (harmonica), Harvey Mandel (guitar), Roy Ruby (bass), and Maurice McKinley (drums). This quintet drives through a blend of high-energy originals as well as an interesting combination of equally commanding cover tunes. However, Goldberg's "Mean Old World" stands as an anomaly. It mirrors a decidedly traditional blues style and incorporates a slower -- if not somewhat methodical -- pace with plenty of room for well-crafted solos. Mandel's projections notably help to coalesce the band's sound and overall direction. On tracks such as the rowdy and playful "Twice a Man," he foreshadows the aggressive and full-bodied approach that his solo fretwork would eventually follow. The same side is also highlighted by Musslewhite's remarkable ensemble interplay as he interjects some tasty amplified mouth harp accents. The title cut is a midtempo Goldberg/Ruby tune with an edgy garage rock feel, slightly reminiscent of Dylan's "Positively Fourth Street." The pair also contribute the upbeat and soulful "Put Me Down." McKinley really shines with a solid backbeat that is fleshed out by some clever licks and fills. Again, front and center is Musslewhite's reserved yet expressive co-lead as he responds to Goldberg's vocals. "Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On" and "That'll Be the Day" are recommended reworkings that perhaps best exemplify the bluesy synthesis that defined the Barry Goldberg Blues Band, at least on this initial effort. Rather than attempting a note-for-note re-creation, they fuse their own blend of electric blues onto the well-known and already established melodies. The same holds for the cover versions of Jimmy Reed's "Can't Stand to See You Go" and Jimmy McCracklin's seminal side, "Think." The 1998 CD reissue on the Collectables label also includes a previously unreleased and highly effective reading of Geoff Muldaur's "Ginger Man."

LA CAJA DE PANDORA - VENCIDOS POR EL TIEMPO

Traslated by google translate from spanish :

The Box of Pandora is considered like one of the groups of MGP-Rock with more future by many people within the musical panorama of our country. Not in vain, the launching of its first disc “To our life another one sentío” the past year had a warm welcome in a market saturated by the fever of the Triumph, first part (and second).

They gained the group nickname revelation, exceptional thanks mainly to its direct ones. Full concerts of force and feeling where the connection with the public is superior to the one hundred percent, if this is possible. But nobody denies that good part of its hook comes dice to recall for all time in our memories to one of the best Spanish groups, “the Last one of the Row”. As much its style of music and instruments as the voice of the soloist the Garci'as are in the same plane of Quimi Portet and Manolo. Speaking from my point of view, I have in the altars this mythical group, and that aid much to that I like the songs of “the box of Pandora”. But I am not nothing in agreement with (many) the appreciations of that one cardboard people that consider a plagiarism total this musical walking. After it, my impressions on Overcome by the Time.

One is compact long play one, almost one hour of songs divided in thirteen you cut where we can find melodies of slow compass, of electrical guitar to all tablet, mixtures of the two formulas and one instruments to close the disc.

We will find the separated disc in two great parts, classifying the songs in the style traditional of the previous disc (and therefore very near the Last one of the Row) and in other styles that move away more of this way, finding some scores that they evoked to me to old successes of the Ear of Go Gogh or Elefantes. One is a rotation of rates that produces an pleasant sensation and that it will not defraud to any which they enjoyed “A our life another Sentío”.

I want to emphasize pieces of this disc in a conglomerate of emotions that I hope is to you attractive and it makes you listen to in his fullness the work of the Catalan group.

Distant sensations and nostalgias of my old discs of Ultimo happened to me the first time that I listened “the scent of our incense”, concretely of the style of that one called disc “Reasonable Astronomy”; a long song that does not have waste and is worth the trouble to listen carefully. Similarly it happened to me with metaphorical “the Shades of”, the past total of guitarreos and of fast rate, conforming perhaps the most intelligent letter of the disc, sharing this honor with “Who needs that it writes to him”, reflection aloud on the controversy that generated the appearance of the group and with a clear reference to that its music is much more that a clónico of Manolo Garci'a, much more who a handful of Sand (perhaps by the name of the first disc of Manolo).

He was pleasant to remember that one self-assured rate of “the Donkeys” when beginning to listen to the CD and to ask us all “How it has gone to you”, refrains that are repeated modifying words in each return, extracted instruments of that one time sea bream of the MGP Spanish, that so many we longed for. Also it waited for a new incursion in the flamenco touch, and they surpassed me to the expectations when listening “Not it give what me”, a species of continuation of “A our life another one sentío” where the voice of Juan sounds clean and escapes raised between palms and Spanish guitar.

And many desire of concert, to listen to this amalgam of MGP and rock beyond the loudspeakers of my chain of music, that is what they provide the glad and cañeros rates of “Overcome by the time” and “Piérdete”. Curradas and original letters, new wink to one of the concepts more used by Manolo, the Time, a delight to hear and to start up to are of their chords.

A perfect song to become first single, “Like the fish”, new reference to rain, which we also found in that one “District” of a year ago, music that hooks to first and assures that many approach to discover the disc.

And I am “More near the sun”, a song to the friendship that approaches us again the optimism and to the hope, to the freedom of the hawk, perhaps the same hawk that cried out “Insurrection” does enough years and that make us again smile thanks to the musical memory. An optimism resisted with the dark “Tell me at least”, an imminent rupture of the love where the soloist takes its voice near the limit to transport to us at the time of anguish that reflects its letter. A very usable resistance.

In order to finish off the CD and the opinion, the Box of Pandora is decided to include an instrumental song approaches that us the Island of Palm, in a summery atmosphere, and that is a point and end from calm and calmness for so many followed emotions.
While you decide if you abrís the Box or no, I will take advantage of the Time to listen to it again. Great work.

TRETTIOARIGA KRIGET - KRIGSSANG 1976

30 Years of War Trettioariga Kriget(Thirty Years War) was formed in 1970 in Saltsjobaden, a seaside resort southeast of Stockholm. They were at the time all around seventeen and still in high school.
The schools mainhall was in the beginning used as the rehearsalroom.
This first lineup of the band was a sixpiece with two drummers! From the start the band included Stefan on bass and vocals, Dag on drums and Olle on harmonica.
1971 some members of the original band left and Robert joined on vocals and guitar.
1972 Olle quit playing harmonica to concentrate on the lyrics, leaving the band to concist only of Stefan, Dag and Robert. They decided they needed a good guitarplayer and started to audition some guitarists. Through these auditions they found Christer who joined the band in summer 1972.
The band rehearsed intensively for a year and a half and developed a style of their own quite unlike the main trend in Swedish rock during the Seventies.
Early 1974 they got a recorddeal with CBS (now Sony Music). Also at that time they got a new rehearsal room in Saltsjobaden. An old underground disco which they called "Grunden". There they would remain for a long time....An album was recorded that summer and released in august 1974. The album was named only "Trettioariga Kriget".
The musical talent and originality of the group was duly recognized in the reviews.
They also now started to tour extensively in Sweden and also did several live performances on national Swedish radio.
The second album "Krigssang" was recorded in the summer of 1975 though it was not released until early 1976 . It is commonly regarded as Trettioariga Krigets "masterpiece". The second side is totally devoted to the long suite "Krigssang 2".
The band continued touring and gigging in -75 and -76 .

In October -76 they left for an extensive English tour from Croydon in London to Cardiff in Wales to Sunderland near the Scotish border. They went down very well and the English musicmagazine "Melody Maker" chose them as one of the most promising bands for -77, speaking enthusiastically of their "intense gripping songs" and saying that "the power of the music is tremendous"!!! Back home again however they got the boot from swedish CBS, who apparently hadn´t heard any news from abroad.
Trettioariga Kriget then chose to sign for a small Swedish independet label called Mistlur.
The first album on this new label was called "hej pa er".It was recorded in summer1978 in "Grunden", the rehearsal room, with mobile recording facilties. By this time Mats had joined on keyboards and saxophone too.
Thealbum was very well received and was to that date their best selling album. The album was seeing the band moving to a more simple songformat and is seen as the last album in a trilogy starting with the first album.
The band continued to tour extensively during this time around Scandinavia.
In the summer of 1979 the band recorded "Mot alla odds" also at "Grunden". It is largely regarded the bands least successful album though it has its moments, i.e. the title song.
This was the last album with Robert who left in autumn 1979 leaving the vocals to Stefan.
In 1980 the band played the Roskilde festival in Denmark and continued the extensive touring. And they also recorded the album called "Kriget" at "Grunden"
The story then jumps to 1992 when Stefan, Robert and Dag played an accousitc set at a releaseparty for the CD-release of "Krigssang". And then in1996 to coincide with the release of their mostly live album "Warmemories", the band decided to do two reunionconcerts in Stockholm.
The album "Glorious war" with recordings from 1970-1971 was released 2004 and the album, "Elden av ar", recorded by the band during 2003 was released 2004, an album full of good songs and the bands playing is stronger than ever!!

Zoot Allures is a 1976 rock album by Frank Zappa. This was Zappa's only release on the Warner Bros. Records label. Due to a lawsuit with his former manager Herb Cohen Frank Zappa's recording contract was temporarily re-assigned from DiscReet Records to Warner Bros.
The title is a pun on the French expression "Zut alors!" which, though it has no direct translation, conveys mild surprise and may be approximated by "Damn it!" or the British use of "Blimey!"

The album was originally conceptualized as a double LP, but for unknown reasons Zappa rearranged, edited, and shortened the track listing to what was eventually released as a single LP.[1] Zappa played a test pressing of the original album for Circus magazine in 1976, which reported a radically different, though slightly erroneous track listing that included "Sleep Dirt", "The Ocean Is the Ultimate Solution", "Filthy Habits", and "Night of the Iron Sausage". The former three tracks eventually surfaced on Sleep Dirt and the posthumous Läther; "Night of the Iron Sausage" remains unreleased, but was seemingly intended to be a guitar solo of fair length. "Wind Up Workin' in a Gas Station" and "Zoot Allures" were notably absent from test pressings.
"Black Napkins", one of several guitar-driven pieces on Zoot Allures, began life accompanied by themes that would later make up the unique piece known as "Sleep Dirt".[2] The performance heard on the album was culled from Zappa's 1976-02-03 performance in Osaka, Japan, though it was edited for the official release.[3] Along with "Zoot Allures" and "The Torture Never Stops", "Black Napkins" became a signature piece for Zappa, featuring heavily in nearly every subsequent tour and several official releases.
"Wonderful Wino" was originally released on Jeff Simmons' 1970 LP, Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up. The album, produced partially by Zappa (though credited as "La Marr Bruister"), also included the titular track, which later appeared on 1980's Joe's Garage.

FREDDIE KING - TEXAS CANNONBALL

Freddie King, the one and only "Texas Cannonball", fused the open-string sound of Texas blues guitar and the raw, screaming tones of West Side Chicago blues. As a guitarist, he is best known for his extremely aggressive picking attack (using a thumbpick and steel fingerpick), his phenomenal collection of signature riffs, and one of the most wicked vibratos the planet has ever seen. His guitar playing was matched in intensity only by his voice.

[BY REQUEST] JO JO GUNNE - BITE DOWN HARD

Jo Jo Gunne began as an outgrowth of the legendary 1960s outfit Spirit. Shortly after that band’s classic Twelve Dreams Of Dr Sardonicus album, group members Jay Ferguson and Mark Andes left to form Jo Jo Gunne with Mark's brother, Matt, on guitar and Curley Smith on percussion. The new group signed to the then-brand new Asylum Records, and over a period of two years Jo Jo Gunne released a total of four albums and several singles before disbanding.

By the time Bite Down Hard was recorded, Mark Andes had left Jo Jo Gunne for Firefall and had been replaced on bass by Jimmie Randall. Bite Down Hard continued to explore territory familiar from their first album but framed in an "FM radio-friendly" way. It features a more polished "boogie rock" production to the music with synthesizers often replacing traditional keyboards and a less frequent appearance of acoustic guitar.

ASTRAL NAVIGATIONS - HOLYGROUND

This used to be the UK '70s collectors Holy Grail before it was reissued on CD at a sensible price. Put out in 1973 on the Holyground label it's a beautiful mixture of mournful folk, dreamy orchestrations, weird sound effects and psychedelic progressive explorations loaded with fuzz guitars.

MILLER ANDERSON - BRIGHT CITY

Miller Anderson recorded his first solo album, Bright city, in 1971, soon after he left Keef Hartley Band. That's why we can find here many of his bandmates here: the late Gary Thain, who later joined Uriah Heep, Mick Weaver and Dino Dines. It's a fantastic and very fine album. Some of my favourite tracks are 'High tide, high water' and 'Alice mercy' to name a few, although all the tracks are really superb.
